For the second year running, market research company GfK Marketing Services UK, has undertaken a study in collaboration with the Photo Imaging Council on the total size of the UK Imaging markets. The 2003 figures reveal a dramatic shift in the structure of the overall sector. GfK Photo Retail Audit Panel operates by collecting transactional sales data direct from Consumer Electronic Multiples, Photographic Specialists, Chemists, Mass Merchandisers, Internet and Grocery Retailers. The information collected from these retailers is used to provide market size, share trend data and pricing information. Through working with PIC they have been able to develop key facts and figures for the Imaging sector. PIC collects and collates data as agreed by participants and distributes the results on a monthly basis. The data provided to PIC is based on manufacturers sell-in figures. GfK Marketing Services tracks the sell-out through retailers. Working together the two organisations have achieved a unique and valid overview of the entire market. By collaborating on this project PIC and GfK have been able to jointly use each others market figures to agree total market size in volume (Millions) for 2003, as below:
As many market experts have predicted, 2003 witnessed a large fall in the traditional photography markets. Analogue camera sales fell by 32% against last year from 3.1 million units down to 2.1 million. Linked to this has been the decline of traditional still film sales, these fell by 13% in the same period to just over 80 million units. In contrast to this has been the continued growth of Single Use Camera sales. In 2003 sales rose to over 22 million units, a growth of 29% against 2002. The key format within the Imaging market this year has been Digital Cameras. Market growth has continued to rise and over the last year volume growth has risen to 82%. This takes the actual market volume to 3.45 million units for the year. There appears to be no slow-down in this market, and we are steadily moving towards a market worth a billion pounds.
