"A PICTURE OF '99" - MILLENNIUM PROJECT

ADDITIONAL PRESS INFORMATION

The Association is working with IPC Magazines, Dixons and with the RPS Photographic Journal on a massive project of imaging and photographic competitions in 19 prestigious magazines & in regional and local newspapers. There is an overall national competition for which all entrants to the magazine competitions will be considered. The competitions involve nearly every aspect of UK life and their object is to record "A PICTURE OF '99", the last year of this century and this millennium.

The magazine competitions will be seen by 5 million readers and run throughout the year of 1999. The magazines participating and their issue dates when the competitions are first announced are:

The Association's member companies - most of them world famous - manufacturers of photographic and imaging equipment are donating prizes worth over £80,000 to the magazine competitions. Consumers have the opportunity of winning the latest products in every magazine - including all kinds of cameras: digital, medium format, SLR, compact, APS and single use cameras; digital printers, imaging software, lenses, flash guns, binoculars and film.

All entrants in the competitions are automatically considered for the national competition for which four prizes are being offered- each for two persons - to exotic holiday destinations like the Maldives. An additional competition for A Picture of '99 is being also being advertised in regional and local newspapers

The final winning 150 images, chosen by an eminent panel - headed by the project's spokesperson The Rt Hon. Austin Mitchell MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Photography Committee - will be reproduced in a book for which Tony Blair, Prime Minister, is writing the foreword. We expect the book to be purchased in volume by families to pass on to future generations and, of course, it should feature in the library network throughout the land. The best images submitted by RPS members will be archived for posterity in a specially bound album.
