SINGLE USE CAMERA RECYCLING

A Single Use Camera Recycling Scheme is available for use by UK photofinishers. Kodak, in partnership with a number of other PIC members, collects the cameras from the main laboratories and minilabs. The cameras are sorted and the majority returned to the respective manufacturer for recycling.

Depending on the camera model, between 76% and 90% of camera components are either re-used or recycled. With over 17.5 million SUC’s sold in the UK in 2002, the quantity of cameras being processed is considerable and the number recycled is growing each year. This ensures that more materials are reused rather than being thrown away by photographic processing laboratories.

The programme is in line with government goals to increase the amount of recycling generally - and meets sustainable development aspirations. It will also meet the requirements of the EC Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which comes into force in August 2004.
